English homework is an important extension and supplement of junior schoolEnglish class and it builds the bridge between English class and the outside world. Bydoing English homework, students can consolidate knowledge, broad horizon, buildinterests, develop personality, improve practical skills and promote autonomouslearning. With the development of the new curriculum and the reform of the basiceducation curriculum, there are great achievements in in-class English-teaching;however, there is limited number of research about junior school English homework.This study aims to investigate the current situation of English homework in juniorschools in Shaanxi province, and find their problems. Then, by learning and applyingsome advanced educational theories, teaching ideas and the New Curriculum Standard,the author puts forward some suggestions and optimizing strategies.The author uses questionnaire, interview survey and case study to investigate thecurrent situation of English homework in junior schools in Shaanxi province. Theresearch covers six aspects: teachers’ understanding and students’ understandingabout English homework; the amount of homework; the content and form of Englishhomework; the help system of homework and involvement of parents; teachers’evaluation and feedback about homework; the management of homework. Throughinvestigation, the author finds out: many teachers assign English homework withoutconsidering the concept of new curriculum standard and they are deeply influenced by“exam-oriented” education thought; too much extracurricular homework brings heavyburden to both teachers and students; the homework content and form are not rich;students themselves are the main body of completing homework, while parentsseldom participate in finishing homework, and there is no perfect homework helpsystem; teachers are the main body of evaluating homework, the evaluation form andcontent are not rich; there is no unified standard to manage homework.In view of the problems found during the investigation, the new Englishcurriculum standard and the Multiple Intelligence Theory, the author puts forward the following improvement strategy: teachers should apply the concept of the newcurriculum standard to their teaching, especially when assigning homework; controlthe quantity of homework, thus reducing the burden of teachers and students; enrichcontent and form of homework; improve the management policy of homework andestablish homework help system; make the evaluation subject, evaluation form.Evaluation content diversified.
