So far very few scholars conducted research about syneasthetic metaphors in Matsuo Bashō poems. Haiku is a popular research subject, however usage of syneasthetic metaphors by haiku poets has not been researched in depth. The aim of this dissertation is providing answers to the following questions: did Matsuo Bashōsuffer from syneasthesia? Is usage of syneasthetic metaphors a result of Zen influence on haiku poetry? Was the usage of syneasthetic metaphors a part of creating "shōfu" poetic style? The first chapter "Prior research" summarizes previous research results.
