| The Narrow Road to the Deep North, which has been published in Genroku15, is thecollected works of Matsuo BashÅ’ travel journals. it is recognized to be the highest-leveltravel journal in Japanese classical literature. This book is based on Matsuo BashÅ’ travelsfrom March to August in Genroku2. Accompanied by his student Kawai Sora, Matsuo BashÅstarted from Edo (Tokyo) in27, March, and reached Ogaki in the late August. The wholetravel took him150days and the whole journey is as long as2400kilometers.This thesis firstly investigates the Edo system,then on the basis of historical background,the author focuses on these travels them-selves, and explores the cultural significances ofthese travels with the old-temple travel as an example.The author mainly has the following point of view. First of all, the comparison of the edoperiod travel traffic and travel of BashÅ.The path of travel of the Narrow Road to the DeepNorth is different from before the trip, not in preparing a perfect walking on the road, but lookat the Aousyu state of economy is not developed, the traffic isn’t convenient, carved out a newjourney.
