Cross-disciplinary studies of fine arts and literature are still in the exploratory stage.there is a lack of quality pieces in existing research articles.Progress in the study is hindered in three ways: 1. Restricted by their knowledge struc ture, few researchers have a equally good grasp of both literature and painting.2. Studies are limited to shallow comparison and analysis without probing inner conne ctions between the two fields. 3. Thinking and theoretical system that can govern the s tudies have yet to form. To make up for the above weakness, this paper attempts to do some in-depth textual analysis of Chinese contemporary short sto ries, aiming to find out elements of fine arts in the short stories and discuss the philosophical thinking, cultural connotation and national characteristics shown by them. Chapter 1, consisting of 3 parts, deals with the commonality of the two art forms, similar studies in the past and the intention of this paper in order to justify the feasibility of this study.Chapter 2, chapter 3 and chapter 4, the main part of the paper, approach the texts of the short stories from the angle of colour, modelling and perspective in fine arts respectively. These three chapters categorize the above“languages”of fine arts applied in literature and establish a whole new system of appreciating novels from the perspectives of fine arts, based on which specific analyses and discussions including the presentation, the aesthetic effect, the implication and philosophy of the elements of fine arts in literature are made in the paper.Chapter 5 sums up the previous chapters and reflects on the limitation of the paper itself and room for improvement in further studies. This paper achieves in the below three aspects: 1.It finds out that the aesthetic elements of fine arts exist extensively in the texts of novels. 2.It opens up a new path for literary appreciation. 3.It classifies different elements of fine arts on narrative level and establishes a theoretical system on the basis of it. This paper aims to shake off the fetters of similar studies in the past and break new ground for cross-disciplinary studies of fine arts and literature.
