Online media as well as online news have been springing up since the 1990 s, and online media has become increasingly mature in the 21 st century. Cyber sports news belongs to emerging practical news. Most of the domestic relevant studies are carried out from the perspective of communication and stylistics. At present, there is not adequate bilingual sports news on websites, and most of them are English-Chinese versions. It shows that due attention has not been given to the research on cyber sports news translation in the academic field. The present study attempts to apply Skopos Theory to the evaluation of the E-C translation of cyber sports news, hoping that it will render help for further research.Skopos Theory is regarded as more appropriate to give guidance for practical translation. It holds that translation is a purposeful activity, which is the most important criterion of translation and determines the translation methods or strategies. It consists of three rules, namely, skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. Among them, skopos rule is the leading one; coherence rule is subordinate to skopos rule, fidelity rule is subordinate to coherence rule; when the purpose of translation does not require coherence, fidelity rule does not work. Coherence rule and fidelity rule are both subject to skopos rule. The present study is a tentative one that evaluates E-C translation of cyber sports news from the lexical, syntactic and textual levels respectively. Firstly, 30 sports news reports are chosen from aiyuba(a famous website offering both English news from VOA, BBC and China daily and the corresponding Chinese version) to build a miniature corpus. Secondly, some typical stylistic features and translation strategies are manually labeled. Thirdly, HyconcV3.9.8 is used to retrieve the above tagging. Finally, the translation is evaluated from the perspective of Skopos Theory.Based on the study, the following conclusions are thereby drawn: on the lexical level, names, numbers and nicknames are more frequently used in target texts than in source texts, but the frequencies of abbreviations are just the opposite. Meanwhile, skopos rule and fidelity rule are easily overlooked or violated in lexical translation; on the syntactic level, active voice is more frequently used in target texts, passive voice is the reverse. The frequencies of direct quotations are similar in both texts. Coherence rule is sometimes violated due to some cultural factors; on the textual level, the number of sentences in target texts is larger than that in source texts. The number of paragraphs is similar in both texts. The translation of sports features basically conforms to skopos rule and coherence rule, skopos rule is hardly abided by in sports news stories translation.
