C-E Translation Report On CIIE News (2020) Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

In recent years,China’s exhibition industry is booming,and China has become the main exhibition market in the world with the Olympic Games,Asian Games,World Expo,forums,summits,auto shows and competitive competitions held in China.The relevant media reports on these exhibitions are exhibition news.The third China International Import Expo(CIIE)was held in 2020,and it is a national-level exhibition with import as its theme.The global consumer market is depressed due to the impact of the pandemic.The expo provides a platform and opportunities for the countries and enterprises in the world,which has also played a role in promoting the development of the global economy.In order to let other countries and small and medium-sized enterprises know more about the expo,it is necessary to increase its publicity.Therefore,improving the quality of CIIE news translation has become a project with important theoretical and practical significance.Since September 2019,the translator has begun to collect and sort out the news of the Expo,and translated 10 pieces of Chinese exhibition news with more than 20,000 words in the original text.This practice report is based on the news of the Expo.In the report,the translator adopts the case method of translation,summarizes some of the author’s translation experience in the translation process,and expounds how to translate the exhibition news under the guidance of Skopos theory.It is found that translating news involves lexical,syntactic and textual transformations.On the lexical level,translation methods including paraphrase and idiomatic translation,and translation techniques including addition,omission and transliteration with annotations are employed to build a bridge for target readers.On the syntactic level,literal translation and free translation are used as the translation methods,and addition,omission,division and shift are used to reduce the comprehension barriers caused by the language differences.On the textual level,cohesive devices are used to effectively solve the problem of repetition in Chinese.Three rules of Skopos theory play a significant role on English translation of exhibition news,which further enriches the application of Skopos theory in the practice.
