Study Of Military Words Of Tang Dynasty Epitaphs

The Tang Dynasty is one of the most powerful times in China, and the unearthed epitaphs in that dynasty are also the most abundant of the whole history. As unearthed stone material, Tang Dynasty epitaphs are numerous, credible and rich in content. Its value is significant whether in the study of Chinese language or the study of the social life of the Tang Dynasty.Currently the study on Tang Dynasty epitaphs is nearly blank, especially in terms of language. Tang Dynasty language is an important part of language studies in the middle ancient times, and the study of Chinese Ancient Character without stone epitaph material as evidence and supplement is always incomplete.Military words in Tang Dynasty epitaphs are abundant. Tang Dynasty, as one of the most prosperous era of the history, the outbreak of war never stopped. With the military words an entry point, the paper is aimed at studying its meaning, aggregation, characteristic, its changes and laws in the development of different stages, which can not only help to fill the gaps in the study the Tang Dynasty military vocabulary, promote research in the military vocabulary of Chinese lexicology, but also can outline the basic look of the Tang Dynasty military life.The paper is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, which is an overview of the development of stone epitaphs, of the history and current situation of the Tang Dynasty epitaphs, and of the review of the overall situation of military words and thus commenting on the significance and value of vocabulary research of the Tang Dynasty. The adopted main research methods are detailed description, semantic study, vertical and horizontal comparison and summary of the law.According to the six aspects of military life, the second chapter to the seventh chapter is classified for the research of military vocabulary. Based on the particularity which the Epitaphs is the record of epitaph owner, the second to the seventh chapter of this paper is named as “study on officers and men”, “study on army words”, “study on war words”, “study on armament words”, “study on military strategy”, and “study on military allusion”. Each chapter describes the military words as exhaustive as possible and analyzes and explains thoroughly and meticulously with Semantic Field. The eighth chapter makes the structural analysis and meaning constitution analysis of the selected military words in the previous chapters to summarize its inherent laws.With the exhaustive description of military words, on the one hand it can collate and analyze the Tang Dynasty epitaphs, fill the blank of research on the Tang Dynasty military words and as unearthed material it can supplement the study of military vocabulary effectively. On the other hand, the analysis and interpretation of a large number of military words can contribute to outlining the face of the Tang Dynasty military activities more clearly. So that it is easier for people to know about the military life in the Tang Dynasty and study the military culture in Tang Dynasty.
