With the increasing awareness of the importance of the written opinion of the international search authority(WOSA) in patent application under Patent Cooperation Treaty(PCT), its C-E translation deserves equal attention and calls for further research. Based on the author’s translation practice of 670 thousand words in the translation company BJRWS, the paper aims to find solutions to translation problems and conclude translation techniques by analyzing typical translation cases collected. In the paper, translation problems are sorted out and fall into three categories regarding accurate translation, clear translation and idiomatic translation, according to the criteria provided by the proxy for further analysis and discussion. Implications are thus concluded on the linguistic aspect and the non-linguistic aspect. On the linguistic aspect, translation techniques such as addition, omission, shift, division and combination are derived, and Nida’s translation model is introduced to optimize the translation process. On the non-linguistic aspect, the importance of customer requirements, translation tools and resources, and translation project management are proposed by the author as other factors to which attentions should be paid in translation quality improvements. It is expected that the paper can provide some insights to WOSA translation practitioners, translation-major students and researchers.
