Folk song is one of the basic genres of Chinese ballads. The folk songs which are in the themes of labor and love occupy a unique status in the diverse folk cultures for the presence of life philosophy of different minorities and the embodiment of their universal cultural spirits and aesthetic concepts. Since the 20 th century, with the rapid development of Chinese economy and modernization as well as the flourish of Western recognition theory and the study of identity, the exploration on folk song in the perspective of Recognition Theory is becoming one of the significant focuses in academia. But seldom discussion and analysis on the folk song identity transmutation of Buyi minority in the south of Guizhou province are made. So the analysis on the relationship between folk songs and identity of Buyi minority needs to be made.The thesis aims to study Buyi folk songs, and analyzes aesthetic cultural essence of Buyi folk songs, their status during the process of culture construction and the relationship between aesthetic and social construction in the perspective of Recognition Theory. In the previous theoretical horizon and historical context, identity embodied in Buyi folk songs not only include the memories of people in the south of Guizhou province, but also display and maintain their characteristics. And still, the folk songs are the vessels of Buyi people’s emotions and life aesthetic. In nowadays society, emerging new modern cognition and cultural construction, the essences of Buyi folk songs are beyond traditional cognition. The thesis comprehensively employs Cognition Theory and the study approaches of sociology, aesthetics, folklore and communication to explore the essences of Buyi folk songs and the relationship between the characteristics of the lyrics of Buyi folk songs and identity construction. The revision of the representative of Buyi folk songs Pretty Red Flowers and the cultural contention behind it will be analyzed in the thesis.Folk songs not only express life normality of a minority, but also silently construct it’s ethnic aesthetic concepts and identity. Studying the transmutation and identity issues of Buyi folk songs in the perspective of Cognition Theory is significant to reveal the enrich native memorial culture and construct modern aesthetic. Still it is important to break the anthropological and sociological limitations of previous researches.
