Not only is marriage the foundation of human ethics and social system, but also origin governing nation and the root of etiquette.Marriage customs is defined as fixed habits that individuals have to obey whilst they build up marital relationships in particular living areas. As proverbs saying, “Feng xing su cheng, wang shi zhi ji.”(Nation custom is the basic of all substance) “Wei zheng zhi yao, bian feng zheng su,zui qi shang ye.”(Nation custom is regarded as the key measure for government to control a country) Due to the importance of marriage customs, there has been amount of great research of marriage and marriage customs conducted by a large number of academics. It is a fact that regionality, distinctivity and diversity are the obvious features of marriage customs of the Han nationality during the period of Republic of China,nevertheless, the characters of this marriage customs transfer into uniformity under traditional customs restriction. Additionally,uniformity here means combining intercommunity and distinction of regions together. Even though traditional marriage customs still plays an important role in society, new marriage customs gradually emerge and develop with a fast speed.In terms of the Han nationality in Sichuan area during the Republic of China,traditional marriage customs still is as a leader in the majority of areas,especially, in many countryside.Meanwhile, new marriage customs also come to appear and transmit from the Chengdu and Chongqing regions to peripheral regions. There were two peaks of introducing new marriage customs into Sichuan area in the start of Republic of China and during the period of changing capital by Republic government into Chongqing. Thus, new marriage forms gradually appear, such as polite marriage,religion marriage, unit marriage and so on. At the same time, traditional marriage proposal displays a tendency that simple marriage procedure, and divorce and remarriage become a normal phenomenon.This essay will analyze the transmission of marriage customs in Sichuan area in Republic of China era. by the tools of the social and historic perspectives, which is based on a variety of related resources, such as local magazine, local historic literatures, a few of family history records.Through analyzing marriage customs in Sichuan areas from different aspects, this essay will uncover the reasons and push power of the transmission of marriage customs in that time, and will present the different traits of marriage customs in Sichuan area in Republic of China era., such as unbalance distinction, complexity and even the combination of westernmarriage customs and eastern marriage customs. This essay systematically analyzes the marriage customs of the Han nationality during the Republic of China era. in detail in four aspects: history,sociology, psychology and folklore. Context of this essay plays an important and facilitated role in terms of society research and local marriage customs, to some extent,also improves exploration of travel industry. In contemporary times, Chinese government attempts to facilitate social reform and develope to higher level, which has never happened before. There is no doubt that the goal of constructing prosperous society could not be isolated with stable family, happy marriage and harmonious ethos which are beneficial to the achievement of a above goal.What is more, absorbing what people have learnt from the previous history is better for improving current marriage customs in modern times.
