Language is not only an important communication bridge, but a significant means of communication for human beings. Since China’s reform and opening-up drive for the past three decades, China has already achieved a dominant position in the world stage. There also emerged a "Chinese-study fever" in the world, and the compilation and publication of Chinese texts have begun to thrive. These Chinese teaching materials fall into three types:Chinese textbooks, reference tools for studying Chinese, and Chinese grammar books. As is known to all, grammar is a key for studying Chinese and knowing China, and translation is the principal means for learning Chinese grammar, which is frequently used in exercises and explanations for words, grammatical constituents and sentence patterns. However, it is found that translation studies on Chinese grammar textbooks is far from adequate in academic circles of China. Therefore, it is certainly worth discussing in depth. The translation of Chinese grammar textbooks is to translate the text of Chinese grammar, not the grammar translation in Chinese textbooks. These translations relate to the details of grammar rules and the technical terms in Chinese grammar textbooks. The translation subjects are Chinese grammar text. The targeted readers are Chinese learners and researchers. High-quality translation may help promote the all-round development on Chinese learning, spreading worldwide of language, making the Chinese language "go globally." So it has a profound and far-reaching significance for the translation of Chinese grammar textbooks. In view of this, the present thesis, based on Nida’s theory of functional equivalence and taking author’s translation practice of grammar chapters from Modern Chinese as a case study, explores the C-E translation of Chinese grammar at the levels of lexis, syntax and text regarding the translation processes of preparation, translating and editing. The thesis aims to find out the suitable translation strategies and techniques. It is hoped that the present research may shed some helpful insight into the practice of the translation of Chinese grammar textbooks.
