Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), German’s romantic composer and pianist. He has abundance works, including piano music, chamber music, concerto, symphony, chorus, still, art songs and so on. Except for Opera, other music genres are all involved. Although he was born in the romantic period, Brahms likes classical works and advocates classical music style. Many of his works also leave some marks of classical period works. Found in his room, he has his own collection of manuscripts in person. He is almost the earliest one who subscribed to Bach, Handel’works, which we can say he is such a fan of classics. But living in a romantic era with a lot of the new things enthusiastically, his works also affected by the characteristics of that period’s features. So people called him the Reformers-Brahms. Yes, he is really a "reformer" whose works appeared a lot of fresh elements, so that many later composers are attracted by his works. It also has great influence on the later generations. Some would say that Brahms’s growth and development was in the period of bourgeois inaction and that environmental problems caused shortages of Brahms self-confidence which means he always respected the past and so his ambition had been restricted. That is true, but is not totally right. Brahms has a very admiration on the masters of classical period and their works. So his works will be blended in a lot of classical period factor obviously. Of course they also to include his own understanding and development of tune, which make great works appear in our field of vision now. This paper introduces the research from the following four chapters:The first chapter:The Introduction of Brahms and His Piano Works. This chapter briefly introduces Brahms’s life and his piano works and is go to understand the Brahms background of life by starting with the living environment and some important people who have impact on Brahms. And then introduces his piano works as a unity for a more comprehensive introduction of the creation of the Piano Rhapsody. The second chapter:The Analysis of Brahms’Piano Rhapsody Op.79. This chapter has carried on the comprehensive analysis of Brahms Piano Rhapsody. Firstly it discusses the origin and background of the rhapsody. And then it analyzes the performance in two aspects: technology and difficulty. The technology focus on fingering, touch key, dynamics and pedal. Difficulties include maintaining sound, crossed the rhythm, phrase lines, complex rhythm type, three\six\eight octave interval. The third chapter:The Characteristics of Duality on music style. This chapter analyzes the theme, melody, harmony, tonality, rhythm, which can help to discover its music style has duality of the classical period and romantic style. The fourth chapter:The Formation and Development of Duality of Music Style. In the above chapter, the thesis has analyzed the characteristic of dualism. So this chapter it comes to summarize from two aspects:the formation and development of duality. This paper fully demonstrates the duality of Brahms Piano Rhapsody music style characteristics by above analysis. Brahms uses a combination of the two styles--put the rigorous classical style into the romantic style of work, which not only restricts the work and also make an innovation. We can say the Brahms gives the new trend of our times and express themselves to the depths of the heart feeling. He has had a profound effect on the 19th. century even the later.
