"The Classical Discussion" was booming after the period of Emperor Wan-li Ming Dynasty and went even further in the early of Qing Dynasty. "Zuo’s Biography of the Spring and Autumn Annals" had drawn tremendous attentions of scholiasts for both its literary and historic significance. Among them Wang Yuan’s commentary was original and pithy, which is academically important to Scholia, Chinese prose and practical thought, and also to the research of "Zuo’s Biography of the Spring and Autumn Annals" itself.Wang Yuan, descendant of late Ming Dynasty, a typical character of his peer in the early Qing Dynasty, represented the "Yan Yuan & Li Gong’s school of thought". Inevitably influenced by his historical view, hence it is very likely that "a straw may show the wind blows". Since Wang’s study is unusual and has not received due attentions, that’s what this paper need to work on.The Study of Wang Yuan’s "A Review of Zuo’s Biography of the Spring and Autumn Annals" is based on the understanding of characters, to discuss the time on layers of advancing. As for content and method, it particularly differentiates comment and annotation, finding its bearings in forks, which utters the significance of the paper. The conclusion returns to the concern of human, featuring the temperature of humanity, and trys to avoid excessive objectification.The thesis contains four chapters and a conclusion. Chapter 1 is mainly about the writers and their times. Firstly, briefly examine Wang’s lifetime and acquaintances, including his names, place of birth and people related to the writing of "Zuo’s Biography of the Spring and Autumn Annals", and give an overview of his literature and history. Secondly, is about the social situation in early Qing Dynasty, the general introduction and the locomotive days of "The Classical Discussion", so as to learn about the universality, individuality and status of then Wang’s review.Chapter 2 is about the content of Wang’s review. Basing on Wang’s triple-identity of an-overripe-time Confucian, a man of letters in trouble days and adherent of former dynasty, one can perceive his insight into history, talking literature with military and the advocate for the moral of spring and Autumn Annals. In comparison with and Kong Ying-da’s annotation, it is expected to tell the difference of commentaries and the uniqueness of Wang’s writing.Chapter 3 is aimed to detect the features of Wang’s annotation by comparing it with that of Du Yu and Kong Ying-da’s annotation etc. The former seeks true meaning by means of composition instead of verbalism, while the latter, phraseology and structure. In comparison with Du Yu and Kong Ying-da’s annotation, it is expected to tell the difference of commentaries and the uniqueness of Wang’s writing.Chapter 4 explores the significance of Wang’s study in Schoia on the basis of the concept, creation, text, and acceptance; discusses its ideological importance according to literature, history, sociology, indicating that they both reflect different aspects of Wang’s practical thought which was praiseworthy. By analysis of its status and influence then and afterwards, explaining that his achievement is not common and deserves due attentions.Finally, only from the perspectives of Historical Biographies and chronicle to view Wang Yuan’s whole life, be it possible to perceive it as an ambition not achieved, fate admitted and still self-exerted one. The" Zuo’s commentary "mirrors a variety of perplexity of his being of mind, his talent by force of social reality. Hence, in association with reality, the research of Wang Yuan and even Yan Li School would be of higher value. |
