China Review, founded in 19th century when China-West cultural exchanges, is an important English periodicals, was gotten it afloat by the British in Hong Kong. Its content including Chinese and the Far East which is an academic, informative and comprehensiveness English periodical. Its goal is to introduce the arts, geography, history, literature, religion and the like of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and the Far. Hence, the translation and introduction of Chinese classical novels are important parts of it. This text centre in the English translation of classical Chinese novel published in the China Review and explores the translators’ translation strategies, principles, standards of text selection and "the other" image of China in the eyes of the western, in order to shows the progressive meaning of culture communication brought from the English translation of Chinese classical novel published in this periodical.This text is divided into six chapters:The first chapter is the introduction, in order to introduce the research status about China Review and this text’s research significance. Now, though there are many research findings about China review, but there still lack of the system comprehensive study about the Chinese classical novel published in Chinese review.The second chapter’s content is a brief introduction of the China review and the Chinese classical novels published in it. The number of English translation of Chinese classical novels published in China Review is more than other periodicals in modern times and the type is the most. The advantages of serialize and special topic made the time domain of novels broaden and the aesthetic judgment enhanced, which contributes to the translation and spreading of Chinese classical novels in the west.The third chapter’s content is to study the translators’ translation strategies when they translated the classical Chinese novels. Classical Chinese novels have the branch of classical Chinese novels and vernacular novels, and poetry is an important part of Chinese classical novels. The different style of the novels has its unique features. Hence, the translators should adopt different translation strategies in the translation process. The process of novels translated from Chinese into English is not simply and mechanical copy. Instead, it is based on the original work to create.The forth chapter’s content is to analyze the translators’ translation principles. In order to facilitate the readers to understand, translators adopted domesticating translation on the basis of respecting the original work. At the same time, translators also paid attention to the identical-looking characters and to introduce the exotic culture of Chinese characteristics to western readers.The fifth chapter’s content is to study the translators’ translation motives and standards of text selection from the Chinese Review published the types of Chinese classical novels. Translators paid attention to the multi-way exhibition of Chinese society and they were aware of the moral education behind the Chinese classical novels. They were also dreaming about the Chinese ancient poetic life and adored the Chinese-style chivalrous person and hero.At the same time, they reflected the marriage of Chinese women and they gave praise for the women with unique personality.The sixth chapter’s content is to study the Chinese image showed by the English translation. On the one hand, the western, in the eyes of power country, thought China is backward and ignorant in the history of colonial expansion. On the other hand, sinologists had an intense interest in Chinese culture, and they showed a wise, beautiful and mysterious ancient China.
