The source texts of the translation are selected from Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 of the book The Vanishing Face of Gaia:A Final Warning, written by James Lovelock, which was firstly published by Allen Lane in 2009. In 2010, it was published by Penguin Books.In the book, James Lovelock considers that the Gaia theory helps human beings better understand the earth which we are living in and learn how to treat, live with and take good care of our Mother Earth. The selected materials mainly focus on the influences of the global warming on the life of human beings, the enlightenment to people, and also the prediction to the future environment.The report goes with five parts, which firstly introduces the background of this book. The second part elaborates the difficulties and solutions which occur in the translation practice. The third part is about the functional equivalence theory and some specific examples. After that, the forth part makes use of a number of detailed examples to throw light upon the ways of tackling the difficulties from the different layers, such as lexical level, syntactic level and textual level, and refers to some translation strategies and methods under the guidance of the functional equivalence. The last part is the conclusion of the whole work.Through the translation, the translator has become more aware of features of the translation of EST and has learned much more about the science knowledge. Besides that, what the translator has realized is that some translation theories and strategies can be helpful to guide the translation practice, such as the functional equivalence theory and the strategies including following the original syntactic order, reinventing sentence structures, reframing discourses. There is a saying that practice makes perfect, which was well applied in this translation.
