This report is based on the translation of Pendennis, which is written by the 19th century English writer William Makepeace Thackery. Thackeray is a novelist equally famous to Charles Dickens, but his works are not so well-known to Chinese readers. Therefore, the translation of Pendennis will surely help Chinese readers to acquire a new understanding of this great author.Pendennis depicts the developing industrial Britain and exposes the snobbishness and cash nexus of the 19th century English society. Like Thackeray’s other novels, Pendennis is featured with a unique flavor of humor and a faithful reflection of real life. In order to preserve the literary features of the source text, the translator, under the guidance of correlative approach to translation, analyzes the features of the source text and adopts different translation strategies. This report falls into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the task, the source text and the plot of this novel. The second chapter introduces the preparations before translation. The third chapter is a brief introduction to Newmark’s correlative approach to translation, which includes the text categorization (the abstract categorization and the concrete categorization) and different translation methods in relation to the correlative approach, such as transference, cultural method, functional method and descriptive method. The fourth chapter is case studies, which illustrates how correlative approach is applied in this translation task. The last chapter is the conclusion.
