Report On E-C Translation Of Clever, Creative, Modest: The Chinese Language Practice(Chapter 2)

This report is an English-to-Chinese translation practice report. The original text is part of Chapter 2: The Manipulative Speaker chosen from the book Clever, Creative, Modest: The Chinese Language Practice written by Hui-Ching Chang, a Taiwan born American scholar. It is a non-literary translation material. The English text has mentioned many names of Chinese classics and applied a large number of cases from both ancient and modern literature works. The language of the text is objective while the writing is put in various expressions with rich information.Taking English material’s features into consideration, the report adopts Newmark’s communicative translation and “a correlative approach to translation” as translation theory. In case analysis section, the two major translation problems are vocabulary problem and textual problem. Adaptation, explanation and literal translation are used in solving vocabulary problem. Conversion of parts of speech and contextual amplification are employed in textual problem. All the examples from translation practice meet the requirements of Newmark’s translation theories.
