Report Based On The Translation Of Everything I Never Told You

This thesis is a translation report based on the author’s translation practice of Everything I Never Told You, a bestseller novel written by Celeste Ng, a Chinese-American. The novel is made up of 12 chapters, of which the first two, about 10,000 words altogether, was chosen by the author of this report to translate as practice.The original novel, written from a third-person perspective, revolving around the investigation of the causes of Lydia’s death, covers a wide range of themes like racial discrimination, sexual discrimination, family conflict and pursuit of self-worth, etc. The study and translation of the novel will, undoubtedly, help us better understand the Chinese immigrants’adaption to the American society and some social problems like family education, women’s social status, etc.This essay is composed of five chapters. The first chapter introduces purpose of the report and significance of the practice. The second chapter deals with the introduction to the writer, difficulties of achieving dynamic equivalence in the translation task and translation approached employed to the problems. The third chapter will mainly talk about translation preparation which includes pre-translation preparation, translation process and post-translation quality control. In the pre-translation preparation process, the author of this report read the original work in detail and found out the difficult points of translating at first. In addition, in order to maintain the same effect of the original work and achieve equivalence at lexical, syntactic and textual level between the source text and the target text, the author of this report chooses the Dynamic Equivalence as the theoretical basis. The fourth chapter will study strategies employed to achieve equivalence at the levels of lexicon, syntax, text, which is combined with the theory of Dynamic Equivalence. Finally, a conclusion concerning this translation practice will be made, the existing problems, the advantages and disadvantages of the translation version will be analyzed, so as to make it useful for translation of novels of its kind.
