| The report is based on an English-Chinese translation of A Good Man. In the novel, most of the parts are dialogues. In the communication between the characters, different dialogues indicate different moods and modalities. On the basis of the features of the novel, the author chooses interpersonal function in Systemic Functional Grammar as the theoretical guidance. Interpersonal function or interpersonal meaning is one of the three metafunctions. It means that language has the function to show the speakers’ statuses, feelings, attitudes and their opinions on certain things. Interpersonal function is usually realized by mood system and modality system. Language is what people relied on to have interactions with others. People establish as well as maintain interpersonal relationship and affect others’ behaviors via language, and they express their viewpoints and then to bring out others opinions or to change others’perspectives. Under the guidance of interpersonal function, the author attempts to convey the interpersonal meaning by translating the mood and modality of the source text.This report contains four parts. The first chapter is to describe the translation task and purposes. The second chapter is translation processes. The third chapter is the introduction of the interpersonal function in Systemic Functional Grammar and the features of the source text. The important part in this chapter is that the author gives some examples to show that how interpersonal meanings are conveyed from the source text to the target text. The last chapter is the conclusion.Through the report, the author finds out that the interpersonal meaning plays an important role in characterizing and foregrounding the temperament of characters in the novel. It not only strengthens the understanding of the main characters’ personalities, statuses and their relationships in the novel, but also has a great significance to the appreciation and the translation of literary novels. |
