Bayinhui, Eight Musical Instruments Playing Concert, is widespread and has a long history in Xinzhou area, whose main feature is to play for the local folk activities. As a kind of folk music club, Bayinhui is often called drum club in local area and wind and percussion music by academic circle. This paper chooses Bayinhui as the title mainly because it is the most commonly used primordial appellation by local artists and the ordinary citizens, which is in accord with the requirement of anthropological advocacy of "try to put inner vision of the culture holders as the standard and use native appellation".For hundreds of years, Suona has been one of the leading musical instruments in Bayinhui, and it has considerable geographical features and academic research value in terms of playing. This paper will treat Xinzhou Bayinhui as the research object, closely linked to Suona performance, and emphatically focus on the performing repertoire, fingering, techniques and styles to explore Suona performing characteristics in Xinzhou Bayinhui. Me, the author, was born in a musical family performing Xinzhou Bayinhui, and then further studied in an advanced music college majoring in Suona performing, which endowed me a dual identity and two different backgrounds in studying Xinzhou Bayinhui Suona performing and this identity will bring some convenience for the study. This paper attempts to deeply explore Suona playing skills and techniques of expression in Xinzhou area and even northern Shanxi through the research of Suona performing art in Xinzhou Bayinhui, in order to be able to inherit and carry forward Suona performing art in Xinzhou Bayinhui and provide some reference for those professional performers studying Suona music of Shanxi style.
