This paper is a translation report for an excerpt from a book called Society in China, which is written by Robert. K. Douglas, a British envoy to Qing Empire and Sinologist. The book is published by London:A.D.Innes & Co. The main content of this book describes the status of Chinese social life in the late Qing Dynasty from the author’s point of view. This paper consists of a translation report and a translation practice. In this paper, the translation report is a summary for the translation practice. The part of translation practice is composed of an excerpt over 15,000 words from the English original text as well as its following Chinese translation. The translation report mainly summarizes the first two chapters of translation.According to the text function classification translation theory put forward by Peter Newmark, the translator classifies the translation text as expressive text. On the basis of the text features, the translator uses communicative translation strategy to direct this translation practice. In the process of E-C translation, the translator advocate literal translation as a chief method and liberal translation as a secondary one, meanwhile adopting other translation techniques in order to guarantee the smoothness and fluency of the target language and exactly convey the information from the original text. This translation report aims to study the translation strategies and methods of travel book.
