Selected E-C Translation Of Steep Trails And A Critical Commentary

The first part of the project is the E-C translation which is based on the first three chapters of Steep Trails written by John Muir. The selected text which is relevant with tourism, mainly focuses on the description of natural scenery, therefore, there is a high demand of the accuracy of word information and the practicability of language during the translation. Besides, a large number of long sentences are used in the original text, which makes the translation difficult.The second part of the project is the critical commentary, which is divided into four sections. The first section briefly introduces the relevant information of the original text. The second section mainly introduces the functional equivalence. The third section is the application of specific translation approaches. The methods of meaning extension, amplification, omission and conversion are used to deal with the translation of polysemous words, and the methods of following the original syntactic order, reinventing the sentence structures and turning phrases into clauses are used to handle the translation of long sentences. At last, some experiences and skills acquired by the translator during the translation process are summarized.
