Selected E-C Translation Of Reading Zoos And A Critical Commentary

This is an E-C translation project excerpted from Reading Zoos:Representation of Animals and Captivity written by American ecological critic Randy Malamud. It includes two parts. Part one is the source text and its translation. Part two is a critical commentary concerning the meaning of the translation project, the introduction of the source text, the translation theory that guides the translation as well as the translation approaches adopted in the translating process.The source text of the translation is from Chapter 3 "Cages" of the book. The author of the book presents the situation of zoo animals from different perspectives, so as to guide the readers to rethink about the ethic relationship between human and zoo animals. In Chapter 6, the author shows what bad effects zoo cages or "cageless zoos" have on the animals and men kept in them, revealing the theme of the book---captivity, whose essence is the unequal relationship between human and zoo animals. Humans, with the increasing power over nature, intend to dominate zoo animals.Socially, the book is a typical work on ecocriticism, and animal ethics more specifically. Therefore the translation project can help people set up the correct view of the relationship between humans and animals, and inspire them to protect animals as well as ecological environment. Academically, the translator experiences some difficulties during the translating process. In order to overcome the difficulties and accomplish the translation project, the translator applies some translation approaches under the guidance of functional equivalence theory. In the second part of the translation project, the translator not only attempts to explain what the translation approaches are, but also why and how in detail so that the translation approaches may be of some use for other translators.
