Decades ago, China was introduced to the world by traditional media such as newspaper, television, broadcast, etc. Nowadays, people can enjoy a comparatively free communication giving the credit to the emergence of various internet interfaces. An unprecedented magnanimity of resources of information is shown, which makes the world understand China in a wider and deeper way. The world is willing to listen to the story of China and the internet is showing the way. The translation of internet catchphrases, a significant part of the international publicity material translation, becomes a major showcase for China’s story.Internet catchphrases will be studied in this thesis, which refer to any word or expression that is popularized through the internet which reflects the daily political, economic, and cultural life of the people of a nation, region or community. On one hand, human’s vocabulary has been enlarged with tons of new words and expressions emerging online. On the other hand, cognitive gaps occur in the communication between China and the world. Therefore, the appropriate translation of Chinese internet catchphrases will help foreigners understand the authenticity of Chinese culture, which has become a challenge and mission to translators. The thesis conducted a qualitative study into the internet catchphrases. The data were collected as requested in the definition of internet catchphrases from the three major internet platforms in China (Baidu, Sina and Sohu) to establish the corpus. The samples were analyzed from the perspective of Skopos Theory. The result revealed that the principles of loyalty, equivalence, readability and accuracy and the strategies of literal translation, free translation, transliteration, back translation and creative translation should be employed on the basis of the Rules of Skopos Theory. This study attempts to analyze the mechanism regarding the C-E translation of internet catchphrases and the translation strategies so as to provide reference to the international promotion of Chinese culture.
