A Report On Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting Of A Cultural Lecture Titled "Family Reunion Under The Moonlight"

This report is based on a consecutive interpreting practice of a cultural lecture,titled“Family Reunion under the Moonlight”.The speech is featured with strong logic and rich culture-loaded information.During the interpreting process,the interpreter fulfills dual inferential duties by inferring the lecturer’s speech implications and anticipating the target audience’s contextual effects simultaneously.Under the guidance of Relevance Translation Theory,the interpreter proposes suggestions to deal with difficulties encountered when interpreting the cultural lecture,providing references for interpreting practices under the theory’s guidance.The report is structured into five parts.The first chapter introduces the key information related to the task,including the background and remarkable features of the task.The second chapter addresses the preparation process in which the interpreter works as a responsible coordinator between the audience and the lecturer prior to the lecture,as well as an interpreter during the lecture.In the third chapter,a brief introduction is provided to Relevance Translation Theory by reviewing the Ostensive-Inferential Model.During interpreting,improvement of contextual effect and establishment of optimal relevance are two essential phases,in which strategies such as inferring contextual implication,strengthening existing assumptions and anticipation are adopted.Subsequently in the fourth chapter,case analysis is made to ensure the efforts to bridge cultural gaps between the source language and the target language in order to achieve the best contextual effect and optimal relevance.The last chapter highlights the significance of interpreting with optimal relevance to the speaker’s intentions and achieving the best contextual effect on the target audience.
