The Research On The Application Of Chinese Delexical Verb Of Foreign Students

The DELEXICAL VERB is a special kind of verb in modern Chinese. Its specificity is embodied in its imagined lexical meaning and it can not be associated with a particular behavior. There is also some difference between DELEXICAL VERBS and common verbs in terms of syntactic performance and object collocation. In addition, the DELEXICAL VERB is frequently used in Chinese writing and its functions include contributing to strengthening the sentence tone and adjusting the syllable rhythm and so on. As a result of its specificity there is a lot of confusion for foreign students, therefore we have to pay special attention to the DELEXICAL VERB teaching in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language.On the basis of previous studies, this research uses "jiayi" and "jinxing"as two examples and teases out the characteristics of the DELEXICAL VERB. By adopting a method that combines corpus analysis and paper test survey, this research makes a deep and detailed observance and analysis on advanced students’application of "jiayi" and "jinxing".In this paper, we finally reach the following conclusions:Students’application for "jinxing" is much better than "jiayi". But we have to say the general application of "jiayi" and "jinxing" is infrequent. There are some problems such as incorrect usage, shortage of usage and complete avoidance of usage in students’application.Chinese learners are somewhat familiar with the lexical meaning and semantic feature of the DELEXICAL VERB however their understanding is generally unsatisfactory, particularly with regards to the semantic features. For example, the semantic features of "jinxing" [+intransitive], [+durable], [-psychological] and the semantic features of "jiayi" [+transitive], [+non-durable].In terms of the syntactic features and rules of the DELEXICAL VERB, foreign students’ application is also relatively infrequent. However most students show a good understanding of the common objects of the DELEXICAL VERB. For the objects of "jinxing", most students generally master very well. But for the objects of "jiayi", there is still large gap in the levels of understanding among students. There are a lot of DELEXICAL VERB sentences attached with adverbial modifiers including preposition structures, adverbs and auxiliary verbs. There are some errors in the process of students’ application. The errors in "jinxing" sentences mainly include usage in the wrong context and object and adverbial related errors. The errors in "jiayi" sentences mainly include object and adverbial related errors.Most students have no knowledge of the expression efficacy of the DELEXICAL VERB. Meanwhile, the familiarity of the students to the common patterns of the DELEXICAL VERB is at a very low level.There are lots of factors that may affect students’ application of the DELEXICAL VERB such as students’ language level, mother tongue transfer, L2 transfer, learning strategy, Chinese textbooks. In teaching practice, we should pay special attention to the DELEXICAL VERB and correctly guide the students and actively improve study materials and teaching methods.
