Shen Zhou, leader of the school of Wumen Painting and the representative painter in Ming Dynasty. His personal style of "coarse Shen" opened a new trend in art history thus became a hot topic of research. At the moment, most of the researchers ascribed the "coarse Shen" style to his learning from Wang Meng, Huang Gongwang, Wu Zhen and inheritance from Dongju school, as well as learning from other teachers. But the author holds the view that apart from the reasons mentioned above, his personality also played an important part.This paper mainly uses the research method of comparative study and mutual reflection of literature and painting works to trace the personality factors in the "course Shen" style. Firstly, the author gives an analysis of his family background and life experience as well as his influence on later generations. Then by comparing the "coarse Shen" style with other schools of painters in Suzhou to show how "coarse Shen" style different from others. Finally, by digging into the literature related to Shen, the author gives a comprehensive construction of his personality, and verifies its correlation to his "course Shen" style.
