Research Of Grammaticalization Of "gen"(跟)

“gen”(跟)originally used as a noun, in the process of development of Chinese language, it produced three kinds parts of speech including the verbs, prepositions, conjunctions. On the basis of the predecessors’ research results, we will study from the value of the research of “gen”(跟)in this article. We will also list the process of development of “gen”(跟)from hundreds years ago to now and add some new results to the predecessors’. First, we studied the process of grammaticalization of “gen”(跟),found “gen”(跟)in the Southern Song Dynasty grammar into a verb, in the Yuan Dynasty grammar into a conjunction, grammar into a conjunction in the Qing Dynasty. We also analyzed the “gen”(跟)used as a preposition of place; Secondly, on the basis of the research of the grammaticalization of “gen”(跟),we concluded that “gen”(跟)has two grammaticalization paths: First, nouns>with verbs>comitative preposition; Second, comitative preposition>location preposition expressing going through. Finally, we analyzed and had a result, it is metaphor and metonymy that induce the occurrence of “gen”(跟)grammaticalization of motivation, mechanism is reanalysis and analogy.
