The Study Of Translation Of Sight Spot Introduction From The Perspective Of Register Theory

The recent years have seen the significant development of tourist translation studies in China. Theories adopted include functional translation theory, skopos theory and so on. However, most of the studies focus on translation quality assessment or simply summarize translation strategies. Few scholars combine the language of sight spot introduction with its context.Based on the previous studies, the thesis adopts register theory as its theoretical framework. The systemic functional linguistics represented by Halliday holds that the function and the form of language are closely related and language should be studied in its context. As a branch of the SFL, the register theory further argues that the usage of language is related to the context of situation, which includes three register variables, namely field, mode and tenor. Therefore, the thesis argues that the translation of sight spot introduction should achieve register equivalence.In most of the previous studies, the sight spot introductions are randomly selected from different attractions. In this thesis, however, samples are all selected from the Imperial Palace Museum. The author gathers totally 100 samples of the IPM introduction. By comparing the samples from the perspective of field, mode and tenor, the author finds the difference and gives explanation. Finally, the author advocates register equivalence. As to field equivalence, lexical choices and transitivity pattern of the source text and target text should be considered. In order to achieve mode equivalence, theme pattern and cohesion should be viewed. In terms of tenor equivalence, lexical choices and mood pattern should be studied. Besides, the paper summarizes a series of translation strategies when dealing with sight spot introduction, including word-to-word translation, literal translation, transliteration, the supplement of theme and cohesive devices, shift of theme, transformation between the active and passive voice, capitalization, elimination or supplement of cultural knowledge, and so on.On the theoretical aspect, the thesis enriches register studies. On the practical aspect, the thesis advocates register equivalence. It is hoped that the thesis can provide guidance to further translation studies of sight spot introduction.
