Gabriel Fauré is a representative of outstanding composer between the end of19 th century and the beginning of 20 th century. He composed more than one hundred classical works in his composing career of more than sixty years. The style of his works is gloomy and refined, implicit and sentimental with nobility. He mostly elected distinguished poem as lyrics. His works and style has made an tremendous influence on many later composers.In this paper, it represents the definition, rise, development and style of French songs in general. Then it states the style and characteristics of three periods of Gabriel Fauré’s song-writing. It makes a brief analysis of Après un Réve and Chanson d’Amour of different stages. Finally it concludes the singing processing, teaching value and the role of Gabriel Fauré’s works. I hope this paper will broach the recognition and the understanding of Gabriel Fauré’s works.
