The China in the early 20 th century was the unrest society with internal and external problems, foreign western culture and local traditional culture collided and impacted each other, Chinese intellectuals made constant explorations and reflection in the stage of the great social and historical transitions to seek the national and personal way. The image of Ling Yu Zhe(unnecessary persons) appeared under such a social and historical background, starting from modern writer Yu Dafu, a series of Ling Yu Zhe had successively appeared in the character gallery of Chinese modern literature or even contemporary literature, and the images of Ling Yu Zhe with different cultural connotations had appeared in different historical periods and different social contexts. The images of Ling Yu Zhe had recurred in the long history of the 20 th century Chinese Literature, and they also changed with the time. This paper mainly writes on the images of Ling Yu Zhe in Chinese contemporary literature from the May Fourth Movement, and by historically collating the images of Ling Yu Zhe, this paper aims to reveal this image’s different expressions in various historical periods and various writers’ writing.This paper is divided into five sections of the introduction, the images of Ling Yu Zhe in Chinese modern literature, the images of Ling Yu Zhe in Chinese contemporary literature, the significance in literature history of the image changes in Ling Yu Zhe and the conclusion. The introduction has two segments: segment 1 mainly discusses the significance in the topic selection of the paper and the research status, and segment 2 focuses on introducing the prototype and development process of Ling Yu Zhe. Chapter 2 is divided into four segments: segment 1 describes the images of Ling Yu Zhe in the era of the May Fourth Movement through the images of Ling Yu Zhe in Yu Dafu’s works, segment 2 talks about the images of Ling Yu Zhe trapped the dilemma in feudal family with the example of Zeng Wenqing, segment 3 talks about the disillusion of the dream from Ling Yu Zhe – Sha Fei and segment 4 discusses the images of Ling Yu Zhe – Fang Hongjian in the attack from Chinese and Western cultures. Chapter 3 is divided into four segments: segment 1 describes the cultural &revolution situation of Ling Yu Zhe – Ni Wucheng from Wang Meng’s works, segment 2 discusses people’s lost & anxious minds in the social transformation with the example of the trouble shooter from Wang Shuo works, segment 3 &4 separately take examples of Shao Jingwen and Yang Ke to talk about the images of Ling Yu Zhe among the contemporary intellectuals who gradually fell in the economic tide. Chapter 4 takes the intellectuals’ mental experience as the discussion point to reveal the significance in literature history of the image changes in Ling Yu Zhe. The final part is the conclusion to summarize the full text.Various images of Ling Yu Zhe have been shaped in Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literatures, and viewing on the entire literature development process, we could find the image of Ling Yu Zhe is changing, in their journey of life, they’re lost and hesitant, and have crisis in the self-identity recognition, while the self-identification crisis in these images have different performance reasons, and the rich artistic contents from these images of Ling Yu Zhe have contributed to the development of Chinese literature.
