When it comes to the study on Chinese modern literature,Mr.Tian Zhongji is always regarded as the progenitor and his three masterpieces are supposed to be the classics which have made great contribution to the development of the history of Chinese modern literature."The History of Chinese Anti-Japanese Literature and Art" written by Mr.Tian Zhongji in 1947 is the first monograph on the scattered Chinese history in modern Chinese literature.The contribution of this book is as follows:Firstly,it pioneeringly constructs a interrelated comprehensive system of literary history.Secondly,it establishes a unique narrative style of "historiography with commentary".Thirdly,it creates a new method of arranging history data.In addition,it is regarded as the only exsiting comprehensive record of Chinese Resistance Literature both at home and abroad.It serves as a link between the proceeding and the following of Chinese Resistance Literature in the historiography of Modern Chinese Literature,and,the enormous contribution it makes in this field,especially on the construction and development of the Discipline,should never be underestimated.The History of Chinese Modern Literature,co-written by Mr.Tian and Mr.Sun Changxi in 1979,is the first book on the history of Chinese modern literature after the Culture Revolution,the merit of which is to bring order out of chaos and set example for the followers.The book remains true to the originals and reflects history as it really was. Redefining what history of literature should be by separating it from political conflicts and the pure account of writers,it gives,a new but objective evaluation to the writers and their works.The History of Chinese Modern Novels,published also by the two masters in 1984,is the first category history book on Chinese modern novels in the mainland of China.This book is the beginning of the study on genre history of Chinese modern novels and inspires the academic study on the history of novels.It creates a unique "hero-centered" method and broadens people's horizon by abandoning ideological limitation and including writers of different identities.
