A Report On The Translation Project For English Website Of School Of Foreign Languages Of Southwest Jiaotong University

This report describes the translation project for the English website of School of Foreign Languages of Southwest Jiaotong University. In this project, a team of 5 student translators, 3 teachers and 1 foreigner was organized to totally translate 59,970 Chinese Characters into English. By reviewing the whole translation process, the author presents the pre-translation analysis, preparations and translation procedure in detail. Based on case study, the target texts produced by the author are generalized into two types:informative texts and news, from which typical examples are selected to analyze the translation strategies adopted to tackle the salient difficulties encountered in practice. For informative texts, translation strategy such as deletion, restructuring and translation-explanation are employed; and for news, understanding target readers’ needs, adjustment of information order and selection of appropriate language style are effective methods to create target texts. In addition, reflections on preparations, translation practice and post-translation are also discussed in the report and the author explored the ways for improvements accordingly.Based on thorough analysis of translation project and representative examples, following conclusions are made in the report:(1) sufficient pre-translation preparations and a sound project management system are greatly important to ensuring the quality and speed of the translation task; (2) due to the intensive information and complicated text types of university English website, appropriate translation methods and strategies should be adopted for different source texts on the basis of full respect of target readers’ needs to achieve its informative function and appellative function:(3) defects inevitably emerge in any translation project:therefore translators’ endeavors in self-improvement, timely communication about problems as well as effective project tracking and control can upgrade the quality of translation as much as possible.The significance of this report lies in some referential value provided for translation or project management of English website of the same kind. Meanwhile, the author hopes the report can serve as an inspiration to translators’ self-improvement.
