China is the origin and communication center of the culture in the world. Tea culture plays an indispensable role in both material and spirit and is also the unique part of Chinese traditional culture. There is a big difference between ancient and present in the way of tea drinking. Making tea is prevalent in Song dynasty.The competition is a perfect combination of art and technology. Both imperial noble and ordinary people are actively involved in this competition.Ewers is the indispensable instruments for tea,which affect the taste and appearance of tea. Ewers and making tea are prevalent in the same time.The evolution of the ewers’ shape is closely related to the development of making tea culture. To some extent, the evolution and popularization of ewers’ shape can reflect the way of drinking tea’s development. But there is a lack of articles about ewers from the perspective of tea culture. A multi use of one device is existence in the ancient time. In the shape the tea of pot is similar to the wine of pot, so people are ease to confuse them. This paper is through the shape’s evolution and regional distribution of the ewers excavated in the tombs to study the popularity and vicissitude of making tea culture in Song Dynasty. This paper is divided into four parts.The first part, introduction, introduces the reason and significance of this topic, the research history and current situation, as well as the research methods and ideas of this paper.The second part describes the tea culture in Song Dynasty and makes a rough distinction between the tea sets and wine sets by my collection of documents and unearthed documents to draw the scope of the study in this paper. During the popularity of making tea culture, the wall paintings about tea and wine and the literati paintings give full expression of required equipment, which provides a more intuitive and rich material for our research. Listing the tea bottle of unearthed tea sets provides the basis for distinguishing tea and wine equipment.The third part, the Song Dynasty has a vast territory. According to the differences of burial location and ewers’ shape, Song is divided into seven regions. Each region’s ewers discovered in the tomb are made a typological classification. And according to the change of the artifacts shape combine with annals materials unearthed in the tomb divide Song into different stage.The fourth part, discussion on related issues,in different time ewers have a variation in number and shape. And ewers distribute differently in space. According to these respects, this part explores the vicissitude of making tea culture hidden behind the development of ewers.The fifth part is the conclusion. This part summarizes the study of this paper and points out the innovation of, the problems and deficiencies of this paper.
