Creative Treason In The Translation Of Children’s Literature Of Science Fiction

Translation is a process of transmitting the message expressed in one language to another language. However, the linguistic and cultural differences between two languages forbid us from a fully translation, especially for literary translation. Given the differences of messages that literary works aim to transmit, we should also take aesthetic enjoyment into consideration, for which the principle of fidelity, as the priority rule in the traditional philosophy of translation cannot fully realize the purpose of translation. So translators must resort to a creative way to translate.The proposal of creative treason by French literary sociologist Robert Escarpit, recognizes the translators’ subjective role in translation, and asks them to creatively adapt different strategies so as to better communicate with the readers. The limitation of treason is that it has to be creative, which compensates for the limitation of fidelity rule.The translation process of Star Wars:Return of the Jedi as a typical children’s science fiction, manifests the concept of creative treason on both micro-level and macro-level. This paper analyzes the translation process of the book to explore how to conduct creative treason in the translation of children’s science fiction.This paper consists of five chapters. Chapter One is an introduction. Chapter Two introduces the book in question, and analyzes the features of it as a children’s science fiction. Chapter Three elicits the definition of creative treason and its origin and limitation, and the necessity of resorting to creative treason. In Chapter Four, the author takes the translation of Star Wars:Return of the Jedi as an example, and illustrates its conduction in the level of words, discourse and culture. Chapter five is a conclusion.
