The research object of the master’s thesis is Idiomatic Dialogues In The Peking Colloquial, For The Use Of Students;by Frederic Henry Balfour(1864-1909)who wan an English businessman come to China in 1870. Then he worked as a pressman,and been the editor of North China Daily News, and wrote the book Idiomatic Dialogues In The Peking Colloquial, For The Use Of Students issued by Shanghai North China company in 1883. This book is a teaching material of spoken Chinese for the middle or high level students. This article is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is introduction, which explains the paper’s research object,research significance and research status, the theories and the methods adopted as well as the sources of the materials will be put forward in this chapter.The second chapter introduces the author’s life and articles, and summarizes the content and background of this book, and explores the draw materials and sources of this teaching book. The book Idiomatic Dialogues In The Peking Colloquial, For The Use Of Students was based on a wide range of materials, the content was abundant,and there were many dialogues about people’s daily lives, also some dialogues were adapted according to the historical story.The third chapter analyses the teaching of vocabulary. The first part of the book pay much attention to basic vocabulary learning and teaching and embodies the teaching opinion that “word” and “sentence” combination. The amount of vocabulary arranged was moderated in second part, and the author consciously put much of idioms proverbs, also lots of “r” words and words from Beijing dialect.The fourth chapter analyzes the teaching of grammar. Describing and analyzing the teaching grammar from speech teaching, phases teaching, and sentence teachingbit by bit. This article selected quantifier and pronouns, verb-complement phrase and additional combinative phrase, “把” sentence and Serial verb sentence to represent the grammar of the book to describe and to analyse.The last part is the basic evaluation of Idiomatic Dialogues In The Peking Colloquial, For The Use Of Students. It’s teaching style is clear, the arrangement of content is properly, teaching content is relatively simple. The dialogue text, teach students communicative dialogues in actual life, enable students to apply. It’s from easy to hard in accordance with the order of second language learning.
