Ke Changji is one of earlier scholars in ancient Chinese characters studies, He is also a famous expert in the art of historian and ancient Chinese characters, who was called by Wang Guowei as the study of ancient writing in one of the great strength of "four juvenile". While the research on ancient Chinese characters is not that much, comparing with other experts who are contemporary to him in the same field. Here is the main works he left to us:Supplementary Explanation on Yin Ruins deed books(《殷虚书契补释》),<Yin Ruins inscriptions Fully category> illustration Dynasty(《<殷墟卜辞综类>例证考释》),Reading Notes of Inscriptions on<A Collection of Inscriptions on Ancient Bronze Objects>(《读<金文编>札记》);Interpretations of Oracle Bone Inscriptions(《甲骨文字解谊》);A prop compiled on the text edit Xiaotun case Reinterpreting(《丙编上辑小屯甲文字例重释》);The Postscript collection of ancient record in Weihua Ge(《韡华阁集古录跋尾》);Geographical distinction of Broze(《金文分域编》);The Geographical distinction of Broze complementarily(《金文分域续编>);The country name research on the Broze inscriptions of Yin dynasty(《殷金文卜辞所见国名考》);The San’s plate research of Di Qiang nation《散氏盘为氐羌族器考》);The Notes of reading<Shan Hai Jing>(《读<山海经>札记》)andso on. There are some books not publishing but be seen in scholars writings when they discuss the related issues. According to Mr.Ke descendants confirmed, those books have the only remaining part of manuscripts. It is pity that we can not read-it carefully. Such as:Chinese family history of ancient country(《中华古代国族史》);The Chinese surname origins Research(《中华姓氏源流考》);The Surname Research from Yin dynasty to Zhou Dynasty(《殷周氏族考》);The Generations of historical Place name in Yin and Zhou dynasty(《殷周史料三代地名辑证》)and so on. This paper takes Ke’s research in ancient Chinese characters as a main purpose to discuss that we can find. By the organized way of analysis, induction, we can come to the conclusion of Mr.Ke’s methods and qualities in researching, and give a more proper assessment, as well as judgment to his entire value objectively as far as possible.This paper is written into four parts. The first one is the concisely introduction of our topic. In this part, we introduce the life experiences and the academic achievements of him. At the same time, it will also be described the contents, research methods, purposes, significances and the present situation from home and abroad on the research. Then the next is the second part which is the most important content. In this section, there are two small topics, explaining the results sought by Mr.Ke separately about Inscriptions on Bones and Tortoise Shell, Inscriptions on Bronze. The writing thought of this topic is:After the introduction of those books, we firstly analyze Mr. Ke’s explanations and make a judge. Certainly, the reason of right or wrong should also be lined up.Through a detailed analysis of his works, and Compared his view with the most widely accepted view academic in current. We want to be able to fully summarize the gains and losses of hie research. The third part is the theories of Mr. Ke’s research. We discuss his methods of learning Inscriptions on Bones and Tortoise Shells, Inscriptions on Bronze and Historical value through form, sound, meaning and so on, to sum up his characteristics of work in order to come up with some useful information for philology. It will be a good reference for descendants learning. The fourth chapter is the conclusions about Mr.Ke’s Paleography Achievements. In this part, we will make as much as possible objective and accurate evaluation.This paper is the first time to explore the achievements in ancient philology of Mr.Ke Changji deeply and systematically ever before. And it will be helpful to strengthen the field on ancient Chinese characters. One the other hand, by judging Mr.Ke’s achievement and shortcomings of methods and feature of the research with the sight of philology, we may offer some useful references when assessing his academic achievement and insufficient deeply. What’s more, this paper may contribute to the development of our branch in an certain extent.
