An English-Chinese Translation Report On Breaking The Bamboo Ceiling(Chapter1-2,Partâ… )

With the rapid development of China’s economy and the improvement of the level of China’s opening up, the non-literature translation has become increasingly important in the field of translation in China. A great many non-literature foreign works have been discovered and translated by translators because of their advanced ideas and pragmatic instructions. There is no doubt that the non-literature translation has become one of the most significant ways for us to learn about the world’s different cultures.This is a report based on the practice of translating the task:the Part I of Breaking the Bamboo Ceiling. This part of the book presents the problems for Asian professionals to climb up to the senior levels in American corporations because of the influence of the bamboo ceiling. It also analyzes the underlying reasons for the existence of the bamboo ceiling at cultural level. Concerning on the difficulties in translating proper nouns, proverbs, long sentences and style etc., this report, on the basis of case analysis, will discuss the translation methods and skills for non-literature translation. The methods aimed at proper nouns and proverbs include literal translation, free translation and transliteration. The skills aimed at long sentences include addition, division and combination. This report also advises that the style of the target text should be expressed in a colloquial way based on the principles of ensuring the accurate rendition of the source text.It is hoped that this report would offer some referential value for the translation of the non-literature works on the theme of workplace. The significance of this translation practice lies on the cultural differences between China and western countries in the workplace.
