A Reflective Research Report On The E-C Translation Of The Story Of Canada (Excerpt)

The Story of Canada is co-written by an American writer Christopher Moore, a beloved novelist Janet Lunn and a master artist Alan Daniel. This book was chosen as one of Canada’s top ten young people’s books of this century. The author translated the first three chapters, and based on the translation of the first two chapters of the book, she completed this reflective research report through the research and summary of this translation practice.During the process of this practice, on the basis of complete reading and full comprehension of the source text, the author adopted several kinds of translation methods and skills to translate the source text, analyzed and modified the target text and summarized the merits and demerits of the target text. In the meanwhile, the author sorted out and dissected the problems in the translation version, namely the problems on the translation of verbs, nouns and words order, and applied amplification, diction and reorganization to solve these problems.Through the research of this translation practice and the settlement and summary of problems, the author has learned more knowledge about the translation of historical and cultural Canadian children’s books, and has been more aware of her shortcomings in translation and the qualities of being a qualified translator. In the future study and work, the author will strengthen and improve her language competence and the flexibility in using translation skills, and expand the scope of knowledge, including different histories and cultures of different countries. It is hoped that this translation can enrich the cases of the translation of historical and cultural children’s books, and if possible, this report will give some references to other translators who encounter the similar problems in the future.
