This is a report based on the translating task:The Note to Reader, Introduction, and Chapter One of Better Than Before-Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives. This report records the whole translation process. In order to achieve "faithfulness and smoothness", "functional equivalence" is adopted as the guiding theory. The translator puts the professional knowledge that has been learnt during the period of MTI into practical translation, and has a deep research on skill and purpose of non-literature translation. The translator also analyzes some typical cases in which several translation theories and strategies are included, such as selection of wording meaning at lexical level, addition and omission, division and combination, at syntactic level, and literal translation and free translation at semantic level. At the same time, the translator has a summary on the translation practice, and sums up a type of translation procedure and strategy which suits this kind of text best. The translator hopes that the thesis can become a guidance and reference for translator’s further translation study. The report can be divided into three parts:introduction, main body and conclusion. The first part is introduction. It gives a brief introduction to the whole report based on the meaning of this translation practice. The main body includes three chapters. The first chapter describes the source task by giving the detailed information of task background, the book and also the author. The second part is translation process description, which consists of the pre-translation preparation, translation integration process, and quality control scheme. Translation process is the execution of the translation plan. The proofreading includes self-proofreading and tutor-proofreading. The third chapter is case analysis part, categorizing the types of problems that have appeared in the translation practice, analyzing its theoretical thinking and solving process, and attempting to summarize the translation strategies for such problems. The last part is conclusion, including the unsolved problems in the translation practice and relevant thinking, and inspiration and prospect for future study. |
