China’s five-thousand-year culture spreads abroad gradually and is internationally well-known. Documentary, a kind of media product with the purpose of spreading information, enjoys great reputation among people for its authentic material, wide subjects and abundant content,playing an increasingly important role in cultural dissemination.Documentary subtitle is to provide language cues for audiences, the translation of which is to convey information authentically and objectively to audiences in an acceptable and plain language. Every year,some excellent documentaries are produced in China. However, not all translations are of good quality, which has influenced western people’s understanding of those documentaries and Chinese culture transmission to a large extent. In addition, researches on documentary subtitle translation is still insufficient at present.According to Skopos theory, translation is a kind of communicative activity based on the original text with a specific purpose and intention. Therefore, research on strategies and techniques of documentary subtitle translation in the documentary, Tea: a Story of the Leaf under Skopos theory is practical and necessary.The thesis finds that translators should translate names of tea andculture-loaded words flexibly and deal with informative texts with literal translation in order to achieve interactive purpose of documentary.Moreover, as for sentences different from English ones, translators ought to break original sentence forms, choose subjects properly and reorganize English sentences. Furthermore, when translating lyrical sentences,translators need to follow English convention with emphases on statements of facts and information conveyance. |
