The material of this simulated sight interpreting(hereinafter SI for short) report is selected from a government work report of the Third Session of the Twelfth National Committee of the CPPCC by Yu Zhengsheng. By the means of simulated SI of this government report, the author makes an analysis of the process of this simulation, finding out some existing problems and corresponding solutions to them. This report is expected to further enhance the interpreters’ abilities on the interpretation of political work reports and to make the interpretation more timely and accurate. The simulated SI practice lasted nearly one and half hours. Yu’s government work report is divided into two parts, a review of the work in 2014 and the plan for the work in 2015, covering the policy implementation and work reflection. During the process of the simulation, there were many expressing difficulties such as the political terms and phrases with Chinese characteristics, which caused many misinterpretations. This report mainly focused on the analysis of these misinterpretations. This report consists of three parts in total. The first chapter introduces an overview of the simulated SI practice, including task background, task content and requirement, task preparation, the process of the interpretation, audience feedback and self-assessment. The second chapter provides an analysis of source text through three aspects, including introduction of the text, linguistic characteristics and the difficulties of the interpretation. The last chapter is the central part of this report. With concrete cases in the simulation, the reason of misinterpretations is given in three aspects, including political terms, tense, long and complicated sentences. According to some typical cases, the corresponding suggestions are provided to solve these problems, such as accumulating the political terms with Chinese characteristics, focusing on the tense changes of verbs in English and splitting or restructuring the long and complicated Chinese sentences, so as to make sure the interpretation more in line with the expression of the target language. The author of this report expects to provide some meaningful references for other interpreters in doing the same or similar political report interpretation.
