The report is based on the translation task of Circus Mirandus written by Cassie Beasley, which was also the first book she got published. The book is a New York Times Book Review Editor s choice and Bestseller of among children s book of 2015, and Booklist commented that !Cassie Beasley has built an imaginative world in evocative." Till now the book has no Chinese version. The story begins when Micah s grandfather Ephraim became seriously ill and he told Micah that the magical Circus Mirandus was true, so Micah started to searching for the circus and the magician Lightbender in order to help his grandfather recover. The report is focused on the obstacles and solutions in translating the novel. Besides abstract and introduction, there are other four parts in the report:The first part gives a brief introduction to the translation task, including the reason of why this translation mission was chosen, the introduction of the author J.K.Rowling, and the main content of the story.The second part deals with the pre-translation preparations, principles of literary translation and introduction of Peter Newmark s translation theory. The translation theory adopted in the translation process is Peter Newmark’s Semantic Translation Theory and Communicative Translation Theory.The third part is about the translation methods adopted in the translation process, including literal translation, free translation and amplification under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory as well as some related case analysis.The last part of this report is a summary of the notions and drawbacks in translating the novel.
