Since Chu Yuan’s Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan released in 1972, Hong Kong’s homosexual movies started a new era.Directors in Hong Kong began to take homosexual characters as movies’ heroes. But because Hong Kong receives a culture combines Chinese traditional culture and British rigorous Christian culture with highly developed economy and society, it treats homosexuality conservatively as well as open-mindedly. This attitude makes movies concentrate on description of deep love and commercial skills. This thesis takes Hong Kong’s homosexual movies as objects to talk about the features and rules and also how to balance emotion and commercial benefits in movies.Chapter one narrates the status quo of homosexual movies and the history of Hong Kong’s homosexual movies and the difficulties they face.Chapter two discusses Hong Kong’s gay movies, which includes homosexual hints in Zhang Che and John Woo’s movies and the importance of family, as well as the unique symptoms for 1997 in movie Hold You Tight and Happy Together.Chapter three analyzes lesbian movies, which puts attention on desperate lesbians whose life is under the atmosphere of this masculine world and female features are exposed to men, and a new age of cross-dressers made by Hark Tsui and the age of post-“Dongfang Bubai”which followed. To sum up, the production and presentation of Hong Kong’s homosexual movies cannot get rid of the thoughts of love. Directors show this love to us without prejudice and build a Utopia for it in spite of the choice of lover’s gender. At the mean time, they have to compromise with homophobic people when writing scripts and shooting for box office, but also choose to appealing for justice while benefit from it.
