| With the development of globalization, international education and academic exchanges have become increasingly frequent. In order to enhance their prestige and seek for more opportunities in international communication, Chinese universities have gradually attached great importance to their English web pages. Shaanxi boasts a great number of universities, and many have established their English websites, but there exist some problems in the translation of their web pages, and the quality the translation needs to be improved, which will definitely exert a positive influence on the publicity of Shaanxi universities. In this thesis the translation of web pages of Shaanxi universities is discussed from the perspective of Skoposthoerie. The problems in the English version of web pages of some Shaanxi universities are indicated and analyzed, and accordingly some suggestions and relevant translation strategies are presented. On the one hand, in the light of Skopostheorie, the text functions, characteristics and addressees of the translations of web pages of Shaanxi universities are discussed. On the other hand,10 overseas universities are selected as the reference and 10 Shaanxi universities as research objects for a comparative study of the language and structure between the Chinese and English web pages of Shaanxi universities. Based on Skopostheorie, four types of translation errors have been pointed out in the English web pages of Shaanxi universities including linguistic, cultural pragmatic and text-specific translation errors: 1) adherence to inflexible faithfulness to the original information, impolitic wordiness and Chinese English etc.; 2) conflicts of the different cultural perspectives, improper translation of cultural information and poor acceptability; 3) reservation of useless translated information or lack of necessary information to target readers; 4) slow updates of the web pages. In order to solve these problems, the author proposes the translation strategies at the macro and micro levels. At the macro level, the universities should enhance the quality control of the translation of their web pages and the translators must be proficient in the languages and cultures, familiar with their characteristics, and they should be competent at both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in translation. At the micro level, the author suggests three translation methods on the basis of Skopostheorie:omission, annotation and adaptation to realize a better communication of the information. It is concluded that from the perspective of Skopostheorie, the C-E translation of web pages of Shaanxi universities should be target-reader-oriented and it should conform to the target readers’ psychological expectation and comprehension in the target culture. Meanwhile, the translation skopos and functions of the target text should be taken into consideration, which is conducive to the choice of appropriate translation strategies. |
