Northern Shaanxi folk song is the crystallization of the spirit, thoughts, and feelings of Northern Shaanxi laboring people, and also an intentional activity. The translation of northern Shaanxi folk songs has always been the focus of attention, and the translation of metaphors in them becomes more difficult and complicated. Through the analysis of metaphors, this thesis believes that these metaphors record the history and culture of northern Shaanxi. However, the translation of metaphors is restricted by the music factors such as rhythm and form. Therefore, the translation of metaphors needs different strategies. This thesis plans to study the translation of metaphors in northern Shaanxi folk songs from the perspective of Skopostheorie.Skopostheorie persists that translation is an intentional intercultural interaction. According to Skopostheorie, the Skopos rule is the foremost rule of the Three Rules of Skopostheorie in the process of translation. According to different purposes, this thesis proposes three translation strategies. With the guidance of the Skopos rule, the liberal translation strategy is adopted to convey the cultural connotation. With the guidance of the coherence rule, the liberal translation plus literal translation is adopted to ensure the coherence of translation of metaphors with the context. With the guidance of the fidelity rule, the literal translation with notes is adopted to keep the music style and form with the source text. This thesis believes that the Skopostheroie can guide the translation of metaphors in northern Shaanxi folk songs. Adopting different translation strategies can fulfill the purposes of appreciating northern Shaanxi folk songs and disseminating the culture.
