The study aims at promoting the quality of C-E translation of Chinese university web pages for overseas students on the external publicity and admission of overseas students by adopting the theoretical framework of Skopostheorie.The thesis is trying to answer the following research questions: 1) On the perspective of Skopostheorie, what are the problems in the C-E translation of Chinese university web pages for overseas students? 2) What are the possible reasons that cause the problems 3) How to promote the quality of C-E translation of Chinese university web pages for overseas students to fulfill the skopos of external publicity and admission of overseas students?To address those questions, web pages for overseas students of 11 universities from China are adopted as the research objects. Among the 11 universities 10 are on the list of top ten universities in China in the year of 2010, according to Chinese University Alumni Association. The rest one is Northwest A&F University where the author is studying. Northwest A&F University is also in the lists of"Project 985"and"Project 211"(two projects aiming to strengthen the higher education in China) as the top ten universities are. For better analysis, introductory texts are taken from the web pages.The thesis focuses on the analysis of the main problems in the C-E translation of Chinese university web pages for overseas students and the possible reasons for the problems as well. Two kinds of translation problems are concluded then: 1) problems caused by unsuccessful taking of the professional and moral responsibilities of the translator; 2) problems caused by the fact that the rights of the translator are not totally guaranteed. The possible reasons that cause the problems on the C-E translation of Chinese university web pages for overseas students under skopostheorie are also discussed: the incompetence and moral irresponsibility of the translators, the unsuitable relationships among all the participants of the translation and inefficient system of translation quality evaluation. Some suggestions are proposed on improving the C-E translation of Chinese university web pages for overseas students: improvement of translation skills, suitable relationships, and efficient system of translation quality evaluation, which will help to better serve the external publicity and admission of overseas students for universities in China.The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter One is the introduction to the purposes and significances, research objects and data collection, research questions, methodology and research contents of the study. Chapter Two is about the literature review of present studies related to the translation of university web pages and the limitations of the previous studies and the enlightenment to present study. Chapter Three is about the theoretical framework of the study and brief introduction to functionalism and Skopostheorie. Some key concepts (skopos, translation brief, theory of translational action, and adequacy) of Skopostheorie are explained and the feasibility of Skopostheorie in the translation of Chinese university web pages for overseas students is also stated. In Chapter Four, an analysis of problems in C-E translation of Chinese university web pages for overseas students is conducted in detail. The analysis includes: the skopos of the C-E translation of Chinese university web pages for overseas students, the function and text type of Chinese university web pages for overseas students, problems in C-E translation Chinese university web pages for overseas students, and suggestion for better translation. In the last chapter, the conclusion of the study is drawn, and the limitation of the president study and suggestions for future studies are also proposed.
