Our country has already become an enormous giant of aged population, the distinctive characteristics of this aging population are the extraordinary number of it, the rate of growth and the upward trend of older population. Correlating to our country’s change in family structure and the development of social economics, the pressure on urban living condition increases, and the rising number of various age groups- elderly population of “Empty Nesters”, old people who lose their only child and the retired elders. The traditional household responsibility of caring for the old enlarges and the demand for social care gradually increases too. However, the present urban social care facilities are commonly low in standard, consist a limited amount of utility and deficient designs in the aspects of comfort and logic, which are incompetent to match the demand of senior people’s daily needs. In the recent years, the current construction and study of our country’s urban social care facilities focus on how these facilities satisfy the physical need of elderly people, but a lack of attention is paid into the area of old people’s psychological behaviours. Based on this type of behaviours, relevant research on the design of urban social care facilities that meets the psychological demand of aged population possesses a positive meaning.Referring to the above background, this essay treats the urban social care facilities of Nanjing as the research object, conducts analysis from the observational angle of elders’ physical, psychological and behavioural characteristics and demand, and suggests the design methodology for facilities built around old people’s psychological behaviours. Through the use of research carried out within real state, the analysis of the essay found out a series of issues, including ignorance of elderly age group’s psychological health exists within the current urban social care facilities of Nanjing, inadequate design specialised at old people’s behavioural characteristics, not enough awareness towards personalised design, absence of professional medical caring functions and other main problems. This essay also concluded that it is difficult for the contemporary urban social care facilities of Nanjing to fulfil the multiple needs of old people. After the problems identified from existing urban social care facilities, they are used as the starting points for trial suggestions on how to design any further facilities based on psychological behaviour- beginning from the systematic exploration of older people’s physical, psychological and behavioural characteristics and demand, and combining this with the special properties of the elders living in the current urban social care facilities. Research key point to note urban social care facilities siting of Nanjing, propsing the difference fuction of three types of urban social care facilities, summarize functional space configuration recommendations of them, then ensuing discussion of each part of design method.Through the perspectives of perceptive environment, living space, service space and the safe environment with no barrier, these five areas are used to propose the design techniques for urban social care facilities based on the psychological behaviour of older population. As a result, to hopefully provide valuable proposals to our country’s design method for urban social care facilities.
