The Road to Character is written by David Brooks who is the columnist of the New York Times. This is a salable inspirational book, and even Bill Gates has recommended it. Through the growth stories of some celebrities, this book tells us how to find a balance between pursing external success and building inner world and how to cultivate our character. The language in this book is popular and easy to understand and its translation has moderate difficulty.Based on the Functional Equivalence Theory of Eugene A. Nida, this report makes a comment of the translation content, including the Introduction and Chapter 10 of this book. It explores how to achieve functional equivalence in translation process from word and syntactic level.This report is made up of three parts. The first part is the introduction. It mainly introduces the current situation of literary translation in the development of China’s society, the application of the Functional Equivalence Theory in the field of literary translation and the application value and practical significance of this translation and this report. The second part is the main body, including three chapters. The first chapter is the description of the translation task, including the introduction of the source material and the Functional Equivalence Theory which is applied in this translation. The second chapter is the translation process including the preparation of the task, the procedure of the task and the review of the task. The third chapter is case analysis. It mainly introduces how to achieve Functional Equivalence Theory in translation process from the aspects of word equivalence and syntactic equivalence. The last part is conclusion. In this part, the experience and gains of this translation practice are summarized, deficiencies are analyzed and concrete requests for being a standard translator are pointed out.This report is an experience summary based on the author’s translation practice. The translator hopes the translation skills and methods can provide reference to other learners and translators, especially the examples analyzed in specific.
