In recent years, square dancing has been a beautiful scene in both rural and urban areas. It is quite popular with the middle-aged and old women in China. This paper explores the origin and development through literature works and analyses the current condition and problems of square dancing development. The whole paper consists of five parts: the introduction, the main body made up of three parts and the conclusion. The introduction part explains the reason for the choice of this topic, the target and method of the study as well as the results of the square dancing studies both at home and abroad. The first chapter analyses the origin of square dancing through the collection between literature and music dancing and points out the close relationship between square dancing and literature. The appearance of the outdoor collective square dancing dates back to the era of the Book of Songs when there are two kinds of outdoor collective dancing: folk collective dancing and royal collective dancing, which reveals people’s working life, war life, worship activities, etc of that time. The difference between “Wu Dui†and “Dui Wu†in Song Dynasty shows the distinction between the folk collective square dancing and royal collective dancing then. In the 1980 s, the outdoor ball emerges, whose participants are mainly educated people in urban areas and meanwhile the folk collective dancing falls. Then, the urban people have so great enthusiasm for dancing that indoor entertainment space is in short. So the ball held in the park, on the road side or in the market is quite common. The second chapter mainly explain the infusion of square dancing and literature. Currently, the development of square dancing is booming. Meanwhile, the online novels and bestsellers on square dancing come into birth one after another. This shows literature goes back to its origin. The book You Are My Super Hero by Bao Jingjing reveals the loneliness of middle-aged and old women; Square Dancing—— You Are My little Apple written by Lu Yingong shows the different attitudes towards square dancing and the role played by square dancing in company culture. It is creative to add cultural elements to square dancing. Local culture has been added into many square dancing performances in Hanzhong, Shaanxi province, which has not only made the local square dancing more diversified and colorful but also has made positive effect in advertising the local culture. The third chapter examines the current condition and problems of the square dancing development. Three problems have been found through the investigations into the rural and urban square dancing in Hanzhong, Shaanxi province. First, the conflict between the supporters and opponents of square dancing is exacerbating; second, the square dancing is not designed to be scientific and safe enough; there is a obvious unbalance between the rural and urban square dancing in development. In a word, this paper studies the square dancing in west China, proving a new perspective for square dancing research. |
